It was 2012 and I had just started my freshmen year of high school. It was a trying time, as I was struggling to get acclimated with the new environment I was surrounded by. Luckily, I found solace in my family. They gave me the tools I needed in order to adjust to my new school. They are my world, the people who always look out for me.  Without insurance, they would not be able to ensure that I would be safe should anything happen to them, and we are blessed to say that is not the case.

Hurricane Sandy devastated the eastern seaboard, changing the lives of numerous Americans. Many of those in our community to this day are affected by the overwhelming destruction the superstorm caused.  Thankfully, the damaged caused to our house was manageable compared to others. However, damage to our fence and the sides of our house would still have cost us thousands of dollars more. With our home insurance we were able to repair the damages that occurred, and we were comforted knowing that we would make it through the storm. The way people’s lives changed really brought to perspective the importance of having insurance, and why it is necessary to have in place.

While home insurance is important, it is not the only insurance that has allowed my family to have security during difficult times. When I was one years old I had pneumonia. This would be the first of a multitude of health issues I would contract, including eczema and asthma. Our health insurance was able to help us through all of these issues, and I am glad to say that I am a healthy eighteen year old young man. I was able to play on my high school football team for three years; something I thought would never be possible when I was younger. Without our health insurance, I do not know where I would be at this point.

Later in life I was exposed to another valuable form of insurance my family used. I was twelve years old when I experienced my first major car accident. It was a frightening event, as I remember watching my little sister ride in the front of the tow truck that was assisting us. She looked nervous, as if she was not sure how to process what had just occurred. In a family of five, our cars are extremely important. Without them, it is hard for us to function in our day to day lives. This is why car insurance is so important for us, as we were able to repair the damages to our vehicle with assistance from our insurance. It allowed our family to process the situation and figure out what the next step needed to be. After our car was fixed, we were able to get back to normal life. However, without car insurance we would not have been able to fix our car, and in turn would have been left struggling with what needed to be done next.

Car accidents can be harmless, but they can also take a fatal turn for the worse. While we were fortunate to be involved in no fatalities, we have experienced loss. When my grandmother passed away, my family was grief-stricken. She was the matriarch of our family and was now no longer with us. One year later, my aunt passed away in her sleep. Both deaths rocked the core of our family, but we were grateful in knowing that each of them had life insurance. In both instances we did not have to worry about how to pay for their funerals, as we knew that they thought in advance about what we may need in order to properly take care of them. This showed me the importance of life insurance, as when I grow older I want to make sure that my family does not have to worry about how they will give me a proper burial or how they will manage when I am gone.

Throughout my life there have been many experiences that have taught me the importance of insurance. Home, health, car, and life insurance are each extremely important when it comes to ensuring the safety and security of a person and their family. I continue to encourage my friends and family to obtain the necessary insurance in order to have that safety net. This is why insurance is important to me, because it has helped not only myself, but my family whenever we have gone through a tough time.
