Institution of attendance: Alcorn State UniversityTo most teenagers insurance does not mean anything but for me it has always meant security and comfort.  I know to most I am just a kid and how could insurance possibly make me fill comfortable and secure.  Well let me explain how Renter’s and Health Insurance have done just that for me over the years.

The earliest example that I can think of was in 2004 when I was just 5 years old mid-December, yes Christmas-time, the home that my mom was renting for us was broken into.  During the break in not only did the thief/thieves, not sure how many it was because they were never caught, kicked in our front door and stole all of the electronics in our home including my entire Disney collection that was on VHS.   They also took all of the Christmas presents from under the tree that my mom had just wrapped the night before and placed out for me to stare at and wonder what was inside. I have never seen my mother this upset before or in such a panic.  As she gave her statement to the police, she kept repeating the same thing how in the world is my baby going to have Christmas now.  I think she said it so much that one of the officers finally asked do you not have insurance.  At that point, it was as if a light bulb came on in her head. She paused for a minute then said Yes, Yes I do!  As soon as the officers were gone and our door was secured she got on the phone to her renters insurance company and they must have been extremely nice because she was smiling during the whole call.  When she got off the phone she told me that everything would be ok they are going to fix it for us.  We went into my room and she had me see if I could remember all of the movies that were missing and started making other lists.  Within a week things started being delivered to our home in some cases they were better than the things we already had because they were old and were not made any more they were replaced with new items.  Christmas was back on in full effect.  Every time something new came to the house my mom would look at me and say that is why you get insurance you never know when you will need it and it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

That couldn’t have been more true 10 years later when my mom was diagnosed with LCIS (Lobular carcinoma in situ) it is an uncommon condition in which abnormal cells form in the lobules or milk glands in the breast. LCIS is not cancer. However, being diagnosed with LCIS indicates that you have an increased risk of developing breast cancer.  This coupled with the fact that the majority of my family has had or does have some form of cancer was a big deal.  So in order to treat these abnormal cells my mom would need two biopsies, quarterly mammograms, and a 5-year medication plan, not to mention the numerous doctors’ visits.  My father, grandmother, and aunt were at a loss my mom is kind of the rock in my family.  When things go wrong everyone usually looks to her to come up with a plan because she is definitely like a boy scout she is always prepared.  True to form my mom came through she did not panic she talked to me and explained everything that needed to be done to ensure that she had a fighting chance then said well I have good health insurance to pay for it so there is nothing left for us to worry about.  Again insurance to the rescue.

Having insurance to me is like giving someone peace of mind.  It lets people know that when things in life go wrong it is there to help set those things right again.  That is comfort and security at is finest and I for one am eternally grateful for the insurance industry.  So much, so that I plan to pass along the foresight to my children to purchase insurance early and maintain it because you never know when it might come in handy and as mom always says it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Enhanced Insurance is not written by attorneys. If you’re looking for legal advice, you need to contact a lawyer. Further, insurance practices and forms change constantly and are varied from state to state. For definitive answers in your area, contact a local agent.

While the majority of people want an agent involved in their purchase of insurance, many people want to see if they can save money by buying direct from the insurance company. Others want to try a direct quote to make sure the premium they’re now paying through their local agent is fair.
