Why is insurance important? We had a bad storm a few years ago. If we did not have insurance, we would have had a lot of expenses which my family would not have been able to pay. As it was, we lost a lot of food since the electricity was out for a week. We had several trees down which blocked the driveway, broke the fence, and created a mess across the yard. I helped my Dad cut the trees up and get them out of the yard, driveway, and off the fence. I helped make every a list of the food so my Dad could turn it into the insurance company. We were fortunate my grandmother didn’t loose electricity for as long as we were, so we had a place to stay. Some homeowners had to stay in 100 heat for nearly a week. We were glad once the electricity was restored to be covered for the expenses.
My grandfather had life insurance. If he didn’t have it, my grandmother would not have had enough money to life on and pay her bills. It was nice to know he had thought about it and had planned ahead. Without proper planning, my family would have had to pitch in and take care of grandma. I am glad he had insurance to take care of the expenses. My grandmother was very appreciative, it was a very sad time and unpredictable. Knowing that everything was taken care of was a big burden lifted off her shoulders. During the time, having less to worry about was a blessing. Planning ahead is necessary and required to have peace during the difficult time of a losing a family member.
Auto insurance is required and necessary where we live in Virginia. If someone hits your car, you know the insurance will cover the expenses. My mother had a man side swipe her car a few years ago. If she didn’t have insurance, she would not have had enough money to repair the vehicle. I am glad she had the appropriate coverage. She had to get a rental car while her car was being repaired. We were glad no one was injured. He just hit her sideways causing a lot of damage. You must have the right amount of coverage for your vehicle so you will not have to go in debt after an accident. It is good to know how much you need so you will not be paying for too much coverage. Consulting with the insurance representative to get competitive rates is very necessary.
Following a big storm, a few years ago our basement flooded while we were out of town. We had insurance to cover the damage, but it was a lot of work cleaning up after the flood. Our septic tank overflowed into the basement. We had to get everything out of the bathroom, family room, playroom, and closet. We lost a lot of things. Some things the insurance paid for and some things they replaced. The flooring had to be replaced as well as the wall which was damaged. It took several months to get everything back to normal, but it was a relief when it was finished. We put sensors in the basement just in case we ever get that much rain again. We had over 10 inches in a few days. My mother lost her Christmas bear collection of animated bears which she decided to not replace. It was just too painful to loose the after having them so long. The flooring was the worst mess. The flooring company replaced it all, so at least we didn’t have to get rid of it. The steps were a lot of work to replace as they were damaged the most. The insulation, boards and flooring were damaged.
We replaced the insulation, boards, and the flooring. I helped my Dad with throwing away everything which was damaged, replacing the floor and covering the insulation. Fortunately, we finally finished the basement which looks better than it did during the flood. It was comforting to know the insurance would cover most of the expenses.
Health insurance is very necessary. We have used our health insurance yearly. Without it we would have too many doctor bills. I had a bout with whooping cough a few years ago. This was very expensive as the doctor’s took a long time to diagnosis my illness. My sister had a bed stomach virus which took her several months to recover. My mother continues to battle with diabetes, which is very expensive since it requires a lot of medicines to control the disease. My father had back surgery several years ago which was very debilitating and requires a lot of therapy to manage the chronic back pain. My sister continues to battle asthma which gets worse with humid and hot weather. If we did not have health insurance our expenses would be very high. I recommend everyone carry health insurance as you never know when your health condition my change. Protection against the diseases which are so rampant today are very necessary in this age of uncertainty. I recommend insurance against as many diseases as you know run in your family. You can’t protect against all, but it, is nice to know you have insurance when a catastrophe occurs.
