When I was in high school, my mom had taught me the importance of insurance. She had taught me about the many forms of insurance and how it has saved our family a lot of money.   I remember the first time I had payed the bill with my mom. Our insurance agent, Martha, was super helpful. She had sat down with me and found the perfect insurance plan for my truck. She had also showed me that if I got good grades to show that I was responsible, I could get money off of my bill every month. My Mom had showed me all the basics of insurance and made sure that we always were protected by insurance, especially health insurance. From my sister and I going to the emergency room for sports injuries to our unwelcome annual shots, health insurance was the first insurance we paid every month. Life is made up of many surprises, many which are not pleasant ones. Insurance helps us through such surprises.

The first example is during one winter, we went on vacation and the temperature dropped drastically and our water froze all of the the pipes and they burst. We live in an old house, with old copper piping. With the pipes broken, my mom was so worried about how much it would cost to fix it. It was just mom and me so we counted every penny. With homeowners insurance, most of the damage was covered. Sometimes it’s hard to come up with the deductible, but I have to say it sure is easier to pay the deductible then the whole amount.  She had to fight with the insurance company about the coverage, but when she was able to show that we had done everything we could have have to make sure that it wasn’t from neglect, the insurance company paid for the repairs.

Another time, someone hit my mom’s truck while it was parked. It was parked on the side of the road when a tow truck had drove by with a car on the bed. The car;s door was not shut properly so when it had hit a bump, the door swung open and our truck happened to be there. It’s a one of a kind car accident. It was damaged but did truck was still driveable. The damage was on the side of the door and some of the roof. Unfortunately, the damage decreased the value of the truck. We were planning to get a new truck before this happened. When we looked how much the value decreased, we could no longer afford to get a new truck. Fortunately, the other driver admitted it was his fault and his insurance company paid for the truck to get repaired. If it wasn’t for insurance, we wouldn’t have been able to get the truck repaired and get fair market value for it. We needed that trade in value to help with the cost of the another vehicle.

I have been really saved by insurance when I first started college this year. Within the first 4 days of the semester, I was very ill and had to go to the hospital. When I got there, I didn’t have an insurance card because the school had not handed them out yet. After x rays, breathing treatments and two prescriptions, the bills really added up. I had to wait to fill the prescriptions written for me because the over the counter price was too high for me to pay out of pocket.  Once I had gotten the bills, I knew I couldn’t afford to pay it. The college was finally able to furnish me my insurance coverage card and had the insurance cover the visit to the hospital and prescriptions. Without the insurance, my college bill, together with the newly added hospital bill, I don’t know if I could continue college. Having insurance is what insures that I can go to college and can be covered for anything that happens along the way to graduation and the rest of my life. A lot can happen between now and then.

Writing this essay had made me realize how much I have taken insurance for granted. All I did before is was complain about how the insurance bill was due and how much it was. Now, not so much. Now all I can think of is whether or not I would still be paying off medical bills or damages to the house. I am very careful to make sure all premiums are paid and I have coverage. With the world nowadays, I couldn’t imagine going through life without insurance protecting you.

Enhanced Insurance is not written by attorneys. If you’re looking for legal advice, you need to contact a lawyer. Further, insurance practices and forms change constantly and are varied from state to state. For definitive answers in your area, contact a local agent.

While the majority of people want an agent involved in their purchase of insurance, many people want to see if they can save money by buying direct from the insurance company. Others want to try a direct quote to make sure the premium they’re now paying through their local agent is fair.
