The hot topic at the lunch table in high school is certainly not about insurance. Many teenagers don’t have insurance on their minds every day largely because, right now, most of us don’t have to worry about paying for it because our parents do. I know that I am very lucky that I don’t have to really think or worry about it too much. However, it is extremely important and helps everyone in many different ways that we may not all realize. The insurance needs that affect my entire family include homeowners insurance, life insurance, their own car insurance, and even my father’s sail boat insurance. However, the two insurances that affect me personally, instead of my family as a whole, are car insurance and health insurance. These two types of insurance have helped me many times in the past and will continue to help me in the future as well.
Let’s start with car insurance. I started driving the end of my sophomore year in high school. I received my families old car, however, the insurance is still under my father’s name. I drive everyday and it is very reassuring to know that I have insurance. I know I am not a perfect driver and neither is anyone else, therefore, insurance is very important. There are those crazy people out there who drink and drive or text and drive, which I know not to do! And once I get behind the wheel, my life is not completely in my control. If I was to get into a car accident then my insurance would cover the cost of the accident if it was my fault. Hopefully I won’t have to worry about any of that but as the saying goes “better to be safe than sorry.” Even though I have not had to use my car insurance it is certainly comforting to know that it is there to help if ever needed.
Unlike my car insurance, I have had to use my health insurance many times. The biggest example would be for going to the doctors and getting the usual check ups. For school sports we need to have physicals done and I am able to complete these at the doctor’s office because my insurance pays for it. When I get my flu shot or immunizations my health insurance pays for them as well. I have had two surgeries that I would not have been able to have without health insurance. The first surgery was a major one that was vital and my family would not have been able to afford it without insurance. With crucial situations such as the one I was in insurance is immensely comforting and helpful. I was only in 7th grade when I had this major surgery and I didn’t even think twice about insurance because I was so focused on the actual surgery. However, I am not sure what I or my family would have done without it! The second surgery I had was for my wisdom teeth. I wouldn’t consider this a major surgery, but again my health insurance came in handy. This surgery was completely necessary to have done and once more my family would not have been able to afford this surgery without my health insurance. Looking at how many times my health insurance has already helped me I am sure it will help me even more in the future!
Looking at the bigger picture, when I become independent and I have to start paying for my own insurance I am sure I will be worrying and learning about it a great deal more. I hope to become a teacher and a perk of that job would be that the district will help to subsidize the cost of my insurance. However, if I don’t go into teaching I will need to learn more about the current Affordable Care Act, which I may need to participate in. Also in the future, homeowners or renters insurances will come into play. Insurance helps pay for many things we all need in life. Without insurance, there is always the fear that someone will get in an accident or become extremely ill and there will be no way to pay for it. Insurance was an exceedingly smart plan to help the people. As a seventeen year old I know about it but I don’t have to really worry about it. However, down the road I will know about it and have to pay for it. I would definitely say it is worth it!
